AI Framework for K-12 Teacher Exploration Sprint
Web/Responsive // Application: Figma
Role: UX Designer
Responsibilities: Create prototype, Participant in the Sprint
Team: 14 people from UX Design, UX Research, Product Management, Instructional Design, Software Engineering, Product Research, and AI Subject Matter Experts
Objective: We were tasked with imagining how an AI assistance could be introduced to K-12 teachers to help them run their class more smoothly.
My role: I was one of the UX designers that was tasked with thinking about how AI could be integrated into our platform to assist the teacher and help them with their daily tasks and give them insights into their students performance so they could help them better and more quickly.
1. Define the Problem
How might we support teachers in tailoring learning experiences so students can achieve milestones and get the help they need along the way?
Long Term Goal: In two years, our solution will serve as a full-time teaching assistant by personalizing learning plans, grading assessments, and delivering insights so teachers can focus on the students who need their attention most.
2. Generate Ideas
These are some of the ideas that were generated and then voted on during the design sprint. These ideas were instrumental in coming up with a direction for what started as a pretty ambiguous ask and quickly started to get more and more defined.
3. Prototype
From the ideating and voting, we had defined three concepts: a library of suggestive prompts, virtual teaching assistant a teacher could interact with, and a personalized content generator within the lesson plans.
4. Test these designs
From the testing, we learned that teachers wanted a way to interact with the AI on every screen and that it should be intergrated with the dashboard and learning experience more. The AI also needed to be anchored to a part of the screen instead of being an overlay.
5. Impact of Sprint
These designs and ideas were then used as the initial fire for the insight assistance that another UX designer took and ran with. It was instrumental for the success to have done this research and iterating first to get to the final buy in from stakeholders. From the positive feedback from the teachers, the business decided this was worth investing more time and resources to make happen.
